15 Things to Keep in mind before buying Decor for your Living Room

Choosing the decor for your living room is tricky. It is the image of yourself that you project to the outside world. It would not be an overstatement to argue that it is an extension of your personality. The right decor accentuates your very being.

But, the wrong decor?

The wrong decor either says you’re trying too hard, or you’re not being authentic to yourself.

So, it’s a fairly important decision to make.

Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

1. Is There Existing Decor?

First things first. Is this a completely empty living room that has no furniture or decorations of any kind? Or, are you choosing to add or replace a few items?

If it is the former, the world is your oyster. You can consider yourself an artist with a blank piece of canvas, and choose to fill it up however you please.

However, if it is the latter, it is advisable that you work within the parameters already set out. Your new purchases must fit with the already established aesthetic of the room. You are not painting on a blank piece of canvas. Instead, you must strive to find the missing puzzle piece that will complete the picture.

2. Do You Have a Vision?

You must have some sort of vision. The journey is always easier to complete if you know where you want to go. In a nutshell, you must have a plan of some sort. You must decide what the finished product will look like and work backwards from there. You must make a list of everything that you need.

3. What Is Your Budget?

This is an important consideration. In fact, some would argue that it is the most important of them all. It is absolutely essential that you decide upon a budget  before you do anything. This will not only allow for more focused browsing but also make for effective purchasing. For example, if you spend too much on the sofa, you may be compelled to spend less on the armchairs and purchase something inferior. However, if you have already decided your budget, you will choose the sofa whilst keeping in mind that you still have to buy armchairs, thus ensuring all products are of equal quality.

4. Who Will You Go Shopping With?

Most people dislike shopping for decor on their own. And, that’s okay. In fact, it is more fun to take someone with you, and also more useful, as you get to discuss your ideas with them. Choosing this person is important. Do you want someone who will affirm all your choices and blindly agree? Do you want someone who will voice their opinion, even if you disagree with them? Maybe you spend too much money, and it would be useful to bring someone who will rein in your spending. There is no hard and fast rule. You must pick someone according to your needs.

5. Shop at Multiple Places

Do not go to just one shop. Even if it looks like they have everything that you need, you must always go to at least two or three shops. This allows you to compare both, variety and prices.

6. Don’t Be Afraid to Mix-And-Match

Mixing and matching can be fun. For example, you can buy both a fancy leather sofa and those wicker chairs you saw at that artsy place. Go out with an open mind.

7. Make Sure You See the Big Picture

Mixing and matching can be fun. But, just because you can do something, it does not mean that you should do something. It is important that you see how each purchase fits into the grand scheme of things. That is to say, each item you purchase must compliment everything else that you have bought, and everything else already in the room. There is a fine line between mix-and-match and mismatched.

8. How Soon Do You Plan on Replacing What You Buy?

This will inform the amount that you spend. If you plan on replacing what you have bought fairly soon, it is advisable to choose the cheaper option. But, if you plan on keeping what you have bought for a while, it is advisable that you spend that little bit extra in order to ensure the best possible quality.

9. Expensive Items Should Be Timeless

If you are going to be spending a lot of money on an item, ensure that it is timeless. It may be in fashion today, but may also look woefully out of place in a few years time. You will then be faced with the choice of spending more money to replace it or having something that is out of fashion.

10. Remember the Walls

What colour are the walls? Are they painted, or is there wallpaper? Does anything adorn them? The walls have already created an aesthetic, and it is important to choose the decor according to that aesthetic.

If you have huge and empty walls without any shelving, hanging some large wall art will fulfill that empty space and make your walls look amazing!

11. And the Flooring

Remember to look down! Marble flooring or wooden flooring? Is it carpeted? Your flooring must compliment your decor, it must not clash with it.

12. What Is the Tone You Want to Create?

You must decide what do you want your living room to say to guests? Do you want it to be classy? Welcoming? Or, both? The type of decor that you choose helps to set the tone.

13. Online Shopping Is Good

Online shopping sites are excellent for both, seeing a lot of variety and making focused purchases. For example, browsing different shades of red cushions.

14. But Sometimes Offline Can Be a Better Option offline

When it comes to buying intricate or expensive items, you should try to check the items in person to get the look and feel the product. “You absolutely must check those items before buying them” If the online store that you are planning to purchase from has an offline outlet, there’s nothing like it

15. Be True to Yourself

It is your living room. So, be honest and buy the things that will make you happy.

Buying decor for your living room can be fun.

No, scratch that.

It should be fun.

These 15 things to keep in mind before buying decor for your living room are must-reads to help you make the right choice.

  1. I appreciate the idea that it will be easier and more effective if we know what our vision for the room is beforehand and work backwards from there. We just finished renovating our basement and want to turn the main room down there into a game room for when we have friends over. Knowing how we want to lay that out would help us buy furniture and decorations for the room.
