Designer Furniture to add that Vintage Feel

If you follow my blog at all, you’ll know that we frequently travel to Medellín, Colombia. And before you go all Narcos on me, you have to understand a few things about Medellín, one of which is the high quality of living and sophisticated lifestyle the city offers.

One of the highlights of our recent trip was a day spent condo shopping.  We’re definitely not quite ready to buy, but we wanted to get an idea of what was out there, and we were definitely not disappointed.  When I was texting some of the photos to a friend, the first thing she said was “And you get to decorate it!”.  If you’ve ever looked for a home, you’ll know that of course the first thing you do when you walk in is start mentally redecorating.  So of course I immediately began planning out our second dream home!

Medellin Colombia loft

This condo was our favorite, a loft-like remodel in the heart of downtown.  For lofts, I think you have to go the opposite as far as furnishings go, I like to do a warm and traditional mix to offset the cooler wood and brick of loft furnishings.  And vintage-style furniture is one of my favorite picks for industrial spaces because there’s nothing I hate more than industrial on industrial, I love a mix of high and low, old and new in a living space rather than having it be all one style.  So of course, my first stop was Sotheby’s Home because I know they have an amazing selection of designer furniture for all different types of tastes and styles.  Since this condo is definitely industrial in feel, the first thing I would need would be a sofa to anchor the space.  I’m loving this Aerin green velvet sofa here because it looks like it would be like lying on a cloud and also, this loft definitely needs a pop of color to start.

There’s also plenty of space for a dining room table, and since it’s a loft style and totally open, I’m thinking I would want a statement table, since it will be one of the first things you see when you walk in.  This Christopher Guy Rain Forest table is perfection, the clean lines and amazing gold base offset the sofa perfectly and it’s pretty large so it would fill up some space.  The floors are a wood laminate (amazing what they can do with that these days) so I’d want a rug, there are tons of options online but you can also check out my post on some of my fave online rug-buying options here.

I’m not always a huge fan of breaking up open spaces but since this condo also has an open hallway and staircase, I feel like a dividing screen would come in handy to break up the living and dining spaces and this one by Julian Chichester fits the bill because it also adds a traditional element and elegant warmth to the room.  I also have had great luck with dividing screens at Home Decorators (now owned by Home Depot).

And then of course to me the best part of decorating is the accent pieces, sure you need your base furniture pieces:  the sofa, the dining table, the bed and other seating options, but I’m really all about accent furniture because it’s the most flexible (and often least expensive) option and in my opinion it has the most impact.  So I’m adoring this bar cart (of course I love anything gold and once again, this loft is kind of cold so it really needs something to warm it up, and rich gold metallics really do the trick.

And then how amazing would this rich velvet leopard-print chair be with the green sofa??

All of the brick in Colombia is orange because of their soil, it’s not red like it is in America, so I really love the idea of rich purple and green velvet furniture plus the leopard print to warm up the earthy tones.  And at night, when the city lights are spread out before you, it would look just spectacular with the right lighting and maybe a gorgeous white orchid or two.  We go through accent chairs almost yearly because we have two cats who are not declawed and one of their favorite things to destroy is chairs (they love the legs) so I’m also a frequent flyer at Wayfair, their chairs often ship in one piece and are super simple to put together.

If you know me you know that even though we travel all around the world, I don’t like to get up off my couch for shopping and I definitely do not brave malls, so I’ve become an expert at ordering furniture online.  At first I was scared of it, but I’ve found that if you’re careful with your measurements and read the descriptions really carefully, you can find fabulous furniture online honestly at a fraction of the cost, and not only that but you’re not limited to just what they have at your local department store.  I try to share my favorite online furniture retailers when I can, do you have a favorite go-to for furniture?  If so leave me a comment below so you can help me furnish the dream loft!

  1. Accent pieces are a for sure must. When decorating they are my favorite pieces to shop for because they are cute and usually cheap like you said! Thanks for sharing!

    1. I SO agree! It’s like jewelry or shoes, if you’re sick of your clothes you can always add those to pump up your outfit, same with like a little chair or table (or my personal fave, pillows lol). Thanks for reading!

  2. I love the color scheme you have picked to decorate! The orange brick is beautiful and the green, purple, and leopard print will look gorgeous!

    1. Thank you Allison! It’s so funny because all of the brick in Medellin is that orange color, I think it comes from the dirt in their mountains. It’s kind of a strange thing to decorate around but I so agree, bright colors and animal print will work best! Thank you so much for reading and I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  3. I love all the gold accents in the furniture pieces! Also never thought about using opposites to decorate, but turned out amazing.

    1. Giulianna I love gold too! I’m totally a gold girl with jewelry for sure, decor I can go both ways. But I so agree and yes opposites are key! I never want my house to be all one way (like all modern or all antique) I like to mix it up. Thanks so much for reading!

  4. I love that loft space! It allows so much light to come and all the accent pieces are a must in limited space for decorating!

    1. Yes I agree! Lofts are so awesome but they’re hard to fill up that’s why I think it’s so important to pick statement furniture that really captures the eye. And I could not agree more on the accent furniture, you can get the same old boring sofa but with pillows and accent pieces you can make it look any way you want. Thanks for reading and commenting!

    1. Yes! The bricks really add that warm feel, I so agree! Thanks so much for reading!

  5. Hey, the article has very good information. This information is really new to me and possibly for some other people as well.
